- January 24, 2001 – New Year’s Day in Chinese calendar. Start of the year of the Metal Snake in Chinese astrology.
- April 16, 2001 – India and Bangladesh begin a five-day border conflict, but are unable to resolve the disputes about their border.
- May 1, 2001 – Philippine President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo declares the existence of “a state of rebellion”, hours after thousands of supporters of her arrested predecessor, Joseph Estrada, storm towards the presidential palace at the height of the EDSA III rebellion.
- June 5, 2001 – Tropical Storm Allison makes landfall on the upper-Texas coastline as a strong tropical storm and dumps large amounts of rain over Houston. The storm causes $5.5 billion in damages, making Allison the costliest tropical storm in U.S. history.
- June 10, 2001 – Pope John Paul II canonizes Lebanon’s first female saint, Saint Rafqa.
- August 6, 2001 – Erwadi fire incident, 28 mentally ill persons tied to chain were burnt to death at a faith based institution at Erwadi, Tamil Nadu.
- September 21, 2001 – America: A Tribute to Heroes is broadcast by over 35 network and cable channels, raising over $200 million for the victims of the September 11 attacks.
- October 8, 2001 – U.S. President George W. Bush announces the establishment of the Office of Homeland Security.
- November 11, 2001 – Journalists Pierre Billaud, Johanne Sutton and Volker Handloik are killed in Afghanistan during an attack on the convoy they are traveling in.
- November 23, 2001 – The Convention on Cybercrime is signed in Budapest, Hungary.
