1997 Calendar Trivia

The next time you can reuse this calendar will be on year 2025. Both calendars will be exactly the same! This is assuming you are not interested in the dates for Easter and other irregular holidays that are based on a solar cycle.

April 4 (4/4), June 6 (6/6), August 8 (8/8), October 10 (10/10), December 12 (12/12), and the last day of February always fall on the same day of the week in any given year. This is called the ‘Doomsday rule’. Check these dates using the full 12-month calendar below to verify.

• January 1, 1997 – Zaire officially joins the World Trade Organization.
• January 3, 1997 – China announces it will spend US$27.7 billion to fight erosion and pollution in the Yangtze and Yellow River valleys.
• February 7, 1997 – New Year’s Day in Chinese calendar. Start of the year of the Fire Ox in Chinese astrology.
• March 22, 1997 – The Comet Hale–Bopp has its closest approach to Earth.
• April 3, 1997 – The Thalit massacre begins in Algeria; all but one of the 53 inhabitants of Thalit are killed by guerrillas.
• June 30, 1997 – The United Kingdom transfers sovereignty over Hong Kong to the People’s Republic of China.
• September 3, 1997 – Vietnam Airlines Flight 815 (Tupolev Tu-134) crashes on approach into Phnom Penh airport, killing 64.
• September 18, 1997 – United States media magnate Ted Turner donates US$1 billion to the United Nations.
• October 4, 1997 – The second largest cash robbery in U.S. history occurs at the Charlotte, North Carolina office of Loomis, Fargo and Company. A Federal Bureau of Investigation investigation eventually results in 24 convictions and the recovery of approximately 95% of the $17.3 million stolen cash.
• December 3, 1997 – In Ottawa, Canada, representatives from 121 countries sign the Ottawa Treaty prohibiting manufacture and deployment of anti-personnel landmines. The United States, People’s Republic of China, and Russia do not sign the treaty, however.
