2003 Calendar Trivia

The next time you can reuse this calendar will be on year 2025. Both calendars will be exactly the same! This is assuming you are not interested in the dates for Easter and other irregular holidays that are based on a solar cycle.

April 4 (4/4), June 6 (6/6), August 8 (8/8), October 10 (10/10), December 12 (12/12), and the last day of February always fall on the same day of the week in any given year. This is called the ‘Doomsday rule’. Check these dates using the full 12-month calendar below to verify.

• February 1, 2003 – New Year’s Day in Chinese calendar. Start of the year of the Water Sheep in Chinese astrology.
• February 18, 2003 – Nearly 200 people die in the Daegu subway fire in South Korea.
• March 17, 2003 – Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs Robin Cook, resigns from the British Cabinet in disagreement with government plans for the 2003 invasion of Iraq.
• July 6, 2003 – The 70-metre Yevpatoria Planetary Radar sends a METI message (Cosmic Call 2) to five stars: Hip 4872, HD 245409, 55 Cancri (HD 75732), HD 10307 and 47 Ursae Majoris (HD 95128). The messages will arrive to these stars in 2036, 2040, 2044, and 2049, respectively.
• August 10, 2003 – The Okinawa Monorail is opened in Naha, Okinawa.
• August 28, 2003 – An electricity blackout cuts off power to around 500,000 people living in south east England and brings 60% of London’s underground rail network to a halt.
• September 25, 2003 – A magnitude-8.0 earthquake strikes just offshore Hokkaidō, Japan.
• October 9, 2003 – Mission: Space opens to the public in the Epcot park at Walt Disney World. The opening ceremony included several astronauts from all eras of space exploration.
• October 15, 2003 – China launches Shenzhou 5, its first manned space mission.
• December 17, 2003 – SpaceShipOne, piloted by Brian Binnie, makes its first powered and first supersonic flight.
