- January 15, 2005 – ESA’s SMART-1 lunar orbiter discovers elements such as calcium, aluminum, silicon, iron, and other surface elements on the Moon.

- February 14, 2005 – Seven people are killed and 151 wounded in a series of bombings by suspected al-Qaeda-linked militants that hit the Philippines’ Makati financial district in Metro Manila, Davao City, and General Santos City.
- February 16, 2005 – The National Hockey League cancels the entire 2004-2005 regular season and playoffs.
- March 1, 2005 – U.S. Supreme Court rules that the execution of juveniles found guilty of murder is unconstitutional marking a change in “national standards,”.
- March 28, 2005 – The 2005 Sumatra earthquake rocks Indonesia, and at magnitude 8.7 is the fourth strongest earthquake since 1965.
- June 21, 2005 – Edgar Ray Killen, who had previously been acquitted for the murders of James Chaney, Andrew Goodman, and Mickey Schwerner, is convicted of manslaughter 41 years afterwards (the case had been reopened in 2004).
- August 12, 2005 – Sri Lanka’s foreign minister, Lakshman Kadirgamar, is fatally shot by an LTTE sniper at his home.
- September 21, 2005 – Hurricane Rita becomes the third most intense hurricane (dropped to 4th on October 19, 2005).
- October 15, 2005 – A riot in Toledo, Ohio breaks out during a National Socialist/Neo-Nazi protest; over 100 are arrested.
